The Large Pieces

For the last five years Marcel has been developing technology to work with 33 COE glass in an offhand setting.  In addition to building an experimental oxygen fired glory hole to make large heavy components he has developed an  “in the kiln assembly process”  for large pieces.  By using the 33 COE glass and these new techniques it has become possible to make hot attached pieces larger and more delicate, the only limitation being  the size of the annealer rather than the strength of the pole turner.  Although other artists have explored similar regions of glasswork, Marcel is a strong innovator in the field who is distinguished by his willingness to share with other artists.

Project 33

Project 33 was hailed as a “landmark event in the growth of the borosilicate movement” says Susan Webb, owner of Glass Alchemy LLC. It is intended to help define and expand the limits of what can be done with 33 COE glass by executing flameworked glass sculpture on an unprecedented scale.  The project is about bringing artists, manufacturers, distributors, galleries and artists together to make an investment in the future of flameworked glass.  marcel Braun assembled a team of artists in 2003 and 2004 to execute these large pieces which were auctioned off to benefit the Eugene Glass School.
